Low Temperature steel pipe

The  specification covers seamless and welded carbon steel pipes for low-temperature service (down to -150 degrees F). Specific nominal pipe size/schedule foreseen by the ASME B36.10 specification are not manufactured in A333 as higher wall thicknesses have a negative effect on the impact properties of the pipe at very low temperatures.
Sizes
  • 1/4” Nominal to 42”O.D.
  • Wall Thickness – Schedule 10 through XXH
  • Lengths required shall be specified on order. If no definite lengths required, following practice applies: Single Random — 17′ ~ 24′ lengths Double Random — 36′ ~ 44′ lengths

Flanges & Fittings
  • Flanges – A/SA 350 LF2, LF3
  • A/SA-420 WPL6, WPL3
A/SA-333 Grades allow for cold temperature service to minus 150°F. A/SA-333 specification covers wall seamless and welded carbon and  intended for use at low temperatures. The pipe shall be made by the seamless or welding process with the addition of no filler metal in the welding operation. All seamless and welded pipes shall be treated to control their microstructure. Tensile tests, impact tests, hydrostatic tests, and nondestructive electric tests shall be made in accordance to specified requirements. This abstract is a brief summary of the referenced standard. It is informational only and not an official part of the standard; the full text of the standard itself must be referred to for its use and application. TESTING REQUIREMENTS ASTM A333 PIPE

IMPACT TEST
Low-temperature carbon steel pipes are supplied in normalized conditions and the Charpy impact test is always executed at specific temperatures to ensure the compliance of the products to the temperature range set by the standard. The minimum impact test temperatures by grade are shown in the table below
A333 Material GradeFC
ASTM A333 Grade Grade 1-50°-45°
ASTM A333 Grade Grade 3-150°-100°
ASTM A333 Grade 6-50°-45°
MECHANICAL TESTS
The mechanical testing on low-temperature carbon steel pipes shall be executed as follows:
  • transverse/longitudinal tension/flattening/hardness/bend: tests to be made on 5% of the pipe from each treated lot. For smaller lots, at least one pipe has to be tested. For material heat treated by the continuous process, tests shall be made on a sufficient number of pipe to constitute 5% of the lot, but in no case less than 2 pipes.
  • Hydrostatic/ impact/one notched bar impact: shall be made from each heat represented in a heat-treatment load on specimens taken from the finished pipe.
Required Markings on Each Length
(On Tags attached to each Bundle in case of Bundled Pipe) Markings will adhere to prescribed specifications in A 999/A999M and be: Rolled, Stamped, or Stenciled (Mfrs. Option) In addition, markings will include:
Hot Finished or Cold DrawnManufacture Name
Specification / GradeHydro or NDE
Seamless or Welded
Schedule Number
the letters “LT” followed by the temperature at which the impact tests were made * and **
the letters “QT” when the pipe is furnished in the quenched and tempered condition
* except when a lower test temperature is required because of reduced specimen size, in which case, the higher impact test temperature applicable to a full size specimen would be marked ** when the size of the finished pipe is insufficient to obtain subsize impact specimens, the marking shall not include the letters “LT” followed by an indicated test temperature unless Supplementary Requirement S! is specified.
